The development of optimal behavioral strategies, thus, appears dependent on the social and physical environmental cues that regulate interpersonal and behavioral development ( Belsky, Steinberg, & Draper, 1991) in these contexts. These cues vary by the childrearing patterns occurring in different family arrangements.

In today’s progressively global world, professional health and mental health care providers are increasingly required to interact with families whose race, culture, national origin, living circumstances, and family composition are different from their own.
